Collagen dosage calculator
Clinical trials that showed benefit used 2.5 to 10 g of hydrolyzed collagen peptides per day for skin (hydration from 4 weeks, elasticity by 12 weeks), 5 to 10 g for joint comfort over 3 to 6 months, 5 g for bone density over 12 months, and 15 g around training for muscle. A 2026 meta-analysis found duration mattered more than dose; wrinkle improvement was not reliably shown. Pick your goal to see the trial-backed dose and timeline.

How this is calculated
The doses above are the ones used in the randomized controlled trials that reported a benefit. They are not minimum effective doses, which have not been established, and more is not shown to be better.
| Goal | Trial doses | Duration to effect | Key evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skin hydration, elasticity | 2.5 to 10 g/day | 4 to 12 weeks | Batool 2026 meta-analysis; de Miranda 2021 (19 RCTs, 1,125 participants) |
| Joint comfort | 5 to 10 g/day | 12 to 24 weeks | Clark 2008 (athletes), several knee OA trials |
| Bone density | 5 g/day | 12 months | König 2018 RCT, Zdzieblik 2021 follow-up |
| Muscle with training | 15 g/day | 12 weeks | Zdzieblik 2015, Kirmse 2019 |
| Tendon, ligament | 10 to 15 g before exercise | 8 to 12 weeks | Shaw 2017, Praet 2019 (small studies) |
What the 2026 meta-analysis changed. Batool and colleagues pooled the RCTs on skin and found consistent gains in hydration (standardised mean difference 0.44) and elasticity (0.62), but the wrinkle effect disappeared after sensitivity analysis, and treatment duration predicted results better than daily dose. The practical reading: 5 g a day for 12 weeks is a sensible test; doubling the dose is unlikely to add much.
Source matters less than people think. Bovine, porcine, marine and fish-skin collagen peptides have similar amino acid profiles once hydrolyzed. Marine collagen is often marketed as better absorbed; the trials do not show a clinically meaningful difference. Choose by price per gram, allergies (fish), and dietary rules (halal, kosher).
Funding. Most collagen trials are funded by manufacturers. Independent replication is limited, which is why the evidence grades above stay at strong or moderate rather than definitive.
